Talk Shop: Lily Lanahan // Elizabeth Lake
ABOUT LILY
Lily Lanahan founded the luxury tabletop brand Elizabeth Lake from her love of home and entertaining. The Texan has worked in antiques textiles, porcelain tableware, and fine art. After getting her masters in decorative arts, she moved on to the interior and auction world of New York. This experience, mixed with her love of “old and beautiful things” — who doesn’t love a flea market! — was the reason behind the 2020 launch of Elizabeth Lake. The brand inspired celebration at home, all while sourcing linens from Belgium, Italy, and Ireland then handstitched by artisans in the tiny Portuguese island of Madeira. The traditional techniques used are apparent in the gorgeous, limited-edition collections Elizabeth Lake produces. We loved sitting down with Lily, and hope you enjoy it!
Describe your style in three words or less:
Old-world & playful
What have been the three biggest influences on your aesthetic in your life:
My aesthetic is deeply influenced by my upbringing in Texas, although I sadly haven’t lived there in almost 20 years! Color fuels and uplifts me, and is so central to what I do. Growing up, celebrations were always bold and bright, planned to a tee with calligraphy and party favors.
I learned to train my eye while studying decorative arts in London and during my early career at Sotheby’s. I’ve always gravitated towards antiques and traditional craftsmanship – anything handmade really. These experiences have probably informed my aesthetic the most.
Travel is my greatest passion and I’m so inspired to learn from new cultures. I spent the last 3 years living in Sydney and the Australians introduced me to a simpler aesthetic and a more effortless style of entertainment. The opposite of my Texas roots!
How did you start your company, and/or what is your favorite thing about what you do:
I’ve always loved antique textiles and I wanted to create a tabletop brand that would apply old-world techniques in a way that felt fresh for the modern-day host. I went to Madeira, Portugal specifically because of its rich history in hand embroidery and appliqué. Collaborating with artisans on Madeira to bring our collections to life is hands down my favorite part of the job.
Do you have a mentor in your career, and if so, how have they helped to shape your trajectory:
My parents were a huge support to me while I launched the business remotely from Australia. The early days can be tough! My dad is an entrepreneur and my mom loves to entertain. They remind me not to take myself too seriously.
What does your home say about you:
I’ve moved 10 times in the last 10 years so it’s safe to say my home is a very eclectic mix! Every object has a personal meaning to me and nothing is matchy-matchy. I have quite the obsession with knick-knacks, but home is never too precious. A dog on the couch is a welcome sign to me.
Where do you find inspiration:
At antique shops, museums, auctions, and while traveling. I love to look at 19th-century American quilts and vintage Marghab linens.
Who are your style icons:
Elsa Schiaparelli, Gloria Vanderbilt, Bunny Williams
What are your key ingredients for entertaining:
Candlelight, a groovy playlist, and a cocktail glass and napkin make everyone feel special. A simple menu and a well-layered table. Place cards that act as props or favors are always a memorable addition.
Do you collect anything:
Vintage barware, cocktail napkins, salt & pepper shakers, candle holders, porcelain kangaroos, the list goes on.
Favorite Instagram accounts to follow for inspiration:
@artgarments, @cindysantiquequilts, @parvumopus, @willowcrossleycreates
What design “rule” do you always follow, and which is made to be broken:
Quality over quantity. My husband’s rule at home is one thing in, one thing out – this one is usually broken

I’m working on an exciting collaboration with Lela Rose for her new venture in Jackson Hole, Lela Rose Ranch!
Wardrobe staples:
Loose button-downs and jeans with loafers or Vans
