Talk Shop: Lisa Henderson // Lisa Henderson Interiors

ABOUT LISA

Lisa Henderson is an Interior Designer based in Dallas, Texas. Upon graduating from Baylor University, Lisa founded Lisa Henderson Interiors in 2010, combining her love for travel, antiques, and art. She enjoys working with various clients around the country, and we love her chic Instagram (peppered with posts of her adorable littles!) With a versatile approach, Lisa uses the traditional style in today’s world. Lisa believes your home should be a reflection of your lifestyle, and we couldn’t agree more. In today’s fast-paced world, Lisa’s MO is that interiors should be a place of escape, serenity, and beauty—whether found in the master bedroom or the laundry room! Each client’s story is personal and, therefore, the blueprint for her inspiration. Her design philosophy is to enhance each client’s daily routine with a beautiful place to call home. We so enjoyed sitting down with Lisa, and hope you enjoy our latest #talkshop!

Describe your style in three words or less:

I would describe my style as classic, comfortable, inviting.

What have been the three biggest influences on your aesthetic in your life:

Travel, architecture, and history have had a significant impact on my aesthetic.

How did you start your company, and/or what is your favorite thing about what you do:

I founded Lisa Henderson Interiors in 2010, combining my love for travel, antiques, and art. My favorite thing that we do is creating a warm and inviting home for people to walk into. I always tell our clients that I want them to be happy to open their front door every single time they walk in and be so happy to be home.

Do you have a mentor in your career, and if so, how have they helped to shape your trajectory:

I have had a lot of teachers throughout my career that I am incredibly thankful for. Each of them have taught me the true value of hard work and productivity, as well as listening to clients while guiding them through the project at the same time.

What does your home say about you:

After purchasing our home 4 years ago with the intention of undergoing a full renovation, we moved back in a year ago and have been finalizing all of the finishing touches. My home reflects my deep love for travel while maintaining an approachable and cozy environment. And of course, much like most of my design work, it is filled with color!

Where do you find inspiration:

I mostly find inspiration through travel, but also antiques and art!

Who are your style icons:

My number one style icon is Jackie Kennedy.

What are your key ingredients for entertaining:

A key ingredient for entertaining is creating an environment that is comfortable for your guests that makes them feel at ease. Also, small details are what matter the most! You don’t have to be ‘fancy’ to make your guests feel like you are thinking of them and want them to have a good time.

Do you collect anything:

I love collecting antiques that add story and meaning to my interior. In addition, I also enjoy collecting art, coffee table books, silver, and dishes.

Favorite Instagram accounts to follow for inspiration:

Some of my favorite accounts to follow for inspiration are @arielokin, @markdsikes, @yolandaedwards, @leahoconnelldesign, and @beckynielseninteriors.

What design “rule” do you always follow, and which is made to be broken:

A design rule is you always want a place to be able to set a drink! When it comes to breaking the rules, my answer is to mix styles. Don’t be afraid to mix contemporary art with more traditional upholstery, etc..

What are you working on right now:

We are currently working on projects in New York, Palm Beach, and Palm Springs, as well as several in our hometown of Dallas.

Wardrobe staples:

I love a good sneaker! Throw a pair of Veja’s on with a flowy dress, and you will have both comfort and style.

Favorite fabric/wallpaper:

I am a lover of all wallpapers and prints, so this is impossible for me to pick. With that being said, some of my favorite brands are Sister Parish, Lisa Fine, Peter Dunham, Penny Morrison, Quadrille, and of course, Lisa Henderson Textiles!

Best interior advice you ever received:

The best interior design advice I have ever received is never to stop learning. I am always educating myself on new brands, methods, and things happening in the design industry. Expand your horizon!

Best career advice you ever received:

Someone once told me, “You’ve got to be hungry to make it work,” which I tend to find is true in both business and design. Sometimes it can take months to find the right piece of furniture or perfect lighting for a space, and in the end, that drive to keep searching is what ultimately makes every design complete.

Types of home purchases you invest in, and save on:

In my opinion, when it comes to making an investment on something for your home, you can’t go wrong with spending money on high-quality, custom upholstery that could be reupholstered or passed down for generations to come. Regarding saving, I think it’s just important to go slow and take your time finding the pieces you love. Rather than cutting corners, there are small things you can do to still make high-end selections without breaking the bank. For example, select a solid drapery vs. a printed pattern.

Your greatest extravagance:

There is nothing I love more than splurging on a really nice hotel stay! When my husband and I travel to Europe, I always plan a few nights at a jewel box type of place.

Favorite places to shop for home:

Some of my favorite places to shop are Blue Print, Wolf Hall Antiques, Nick Brock Antiques, and KRB in New York.

Most prized possession and why:

Without a doubt, my most prized possessions are my children, Lotti, Luke, and Libby.

Your interiors motto:

Not everything has to be perfect or match. Something I always try to tell clients is not to necessarily always buy things for a certain spot. Buy what you love, and it will find a place, especially for things like art and antiques.

Your life motto:

Don’t wait! Take the trip, buy what you love, you’ll never regret it.

Advice for someone looking to define their own interior style:

When it comes to personal style, never be discouraged if it strays from the current trend! Your interiors should always reflect you and your lifestyle.
