Describe your style in three words or less:
Personal, welcoming, creative.
What have been the three biggest influences on your aesthetic in your life:
Growing up surrounded by interior design coffee table books, summers on the New England coast, and time spent working for talented decorators in Manhattan.
How did you start your company, and/or what is your favorite thing about what you do:
I always wanted to be a decorator. After receiving my bachelor’s degree in interior architecture from George Washington University, I made my way to New York for an internship in Bunny Williams’ office. Throughout my twenties, I worked for a range of New York-based designers such as Ashley Whittaker and Tom Scheerer. During the pandemic, a few projects that I couldn’t turn down came my way, so I opened my firm a little sooner than expected. My favorite part of being a designer is working closely with clients to create a personal space that feels specific to their lifestyle and project location. We’re based in Brooklyn, but most of our projects are across the country and world – from Cape Cod to the Caribbean. I love how each project is a blank canvas for something completely different than the last.
Do you have a mentor in your career, and if so, how have they helped to shape your trajectory:
I learned so much while working at Ashley Whittaker’s office. Her projects are extremely detailed and carefully thought out. I’m grateful she continues to be a source of guidance. Thank you, Ashley!
What does your home say about you:
My Brooklyn apartment reflects that I have a puppy, enjoy entertaining, and travel often. I designed my apartment to be neutral, durable, and versatile. It has a simple color palate, which is refreshing after a day spent looking at fabrics.
Where do you find inspiration:
Traveling to new cities to explore local shops, find small artisans, tour historic homes, and visit new museums.
Who are your style icons:
Bunny Mellon, and Rita Konig.
What are your key ingredients for entertaining:
Candlelight, an Alison Roman dish, and ensuring everyone feels right at home.
Do you collect anything:
Over time, I’ve grown a collection of Hermes scarves. Some are new and others belonged to my grandmothers. They’re small pieces of art and the start of a beautiful color scheme.
Favorite Instagram accounts to follow for inspiration:
@louiseroehome for interior inspiration. Her Instagram stories are slideshows of the most beautiful English interiors.
What design “rule” do you always follow, and which is made to be broken:
Follow: The proper height to hang mirrors and artwork, since I’m short.
Break: Any rules around wallpaper. Let’s use it everywhere!
What are you working on right now:
We’re excited to be working on a new Long Island beach house, a home in the English countryside, restoring a Brooklyn apartment, and finishing up a few projects up and down the East Coast.
Wardrobe staples:
I searched for the perfect, crisp white button-down and finally found the Carolyn Shirt from Julia Amory.
Favorite fabric/wallpaper:
This is a difficult question! Marthe Armitage hand blocks the most beautiful wallpapers. I cannot wait to mix them into the schemes for my UK project. Leah O’Connell “Odette” is a new favorite fabric that we’re using in a New York City sunroom.
Best interior advice you ever received:
Use your nice things every day, don’t save them for a special occasion.
Best career advice you ever received:
My dad has given me the advice to “always look forward.” Whether you’re celebrating a big achievement, or something didn’t go as planned, this “what’s next” mindset keeps projects moving and inspires new business ideas.
Types of home purchases you invest in, and save on:
I like to invest in textiles because they guide the color scheme and overall feel of the room. I recommend saving on rugs unless the room needs something special.
Your greatest extravagance:
Travel is my greatest extravagance, even though I don’t travel in an extravagant way. Having the option to pack a suitcase and set off on an adventure is a luxury.
Favorite places to shop for home:
Pimlico Road has all my favorite shops on one charming street.
Most prized possession and why:
An oil painting of a hydrangea bouquet that belonged to my great-grandmother. Years ago, it hung in her New York City apartment, and I love having it in mine.
Your interiors motto:
I believe you should truly love and be excited about every item you purchase for your home.
Your life motto:
I think I need one!
